College of Chemistry of Sichuan University

The College of Chemistry of Sichuan University has a long history of 90 plus years, dated back to 1907 when it was established as chemistry class of the Science Department of the Sichuan School of Higher Education. Numerous distinguished scholars and experts of chemistry have been teaching and conducting research here, thus fostering outstanding graduates, who have been very successful in their varied careers, generation after generation.
The faculty, staff and students have been working diligently and collaboratively since China opened to the outside world. A comprehensive managing system has been established of teaching, research and industrial development. The undergraduate program in our college includes chemistry major and applied chemistry major. The chemistry major covers traditional chemistry areas of inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, polymer chemistry and physics, while the applied chemistry major encompasses areas such as radiochemistry, synthesis of fine chemicals, environmental chemistry, and instrumental analysis. A provincial teaching base has been established here for promoting basic chemistry teaching and talent training in Sichuan Province.
On the level of graduate education, the college of chemistry offers graduate programs leading to master degrees and doctoral degrees in various areas of chemistry such as analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and polymer chemistry and physics. The college has also established a postdoctoral training program, accepting newly graduated doctorate students as postdoctoral research associates in their interested research groups. In addition, several interdisciplinary master programs have been established for the areas of environmental chemistry, applied chemistry, and industrial catalysis. The graduate programs have always been awarded “A” in every national-level academic and administrative evaluation. Physical and organic divisions are established and financially supported as key subjects by the Government of Sichuan Province. In addition, there are many Research Institutions or Centers respectively of Chemical Physics, Bioorganic Chemistry, Organic Metal Complex Catalysis, Degradable and Fire-retardant Polymers,Molecular Functional Materials, Catalytic Materials, Applied Chemistry, Molecular Imitation and Design, Chemoinformatics, Green Chemistry and Technology, Basic Chemistry Teaching, Environmental Chemistry, Laser Chemistry, and Sichuan University Hi-Tech Chemical R&D Center. Among them, the Research Center of Green Chemistry and Technology has become one of the Key Laboratories of Sichuan Province.
The faculty and staff members of the chemistry college make a total of 282, amongst which there are 111 emeritus and 171 presently at their posts. Now the college has 52 professors, including one member of the State Council for Degree and Subject Evaluation, one member of National Teaching-Advisory Committee, four members of Leading Scientists in Natural Sciences of Sichuan Province and eight reserves, 25 doctoral-graduate advisors, three members proudly funded by the Trans-Century Training Programs Foundation for the Talents by the Ministry of Education or Sichuan Province, two backbone young teachers supported by the Ministry of Education. Besides, there are 54 associate professors, 67 lecturers and teaching or research assistants. Eighty-six faculty members are under 50 years old, and 66 of them, i.e. 78%, owned their doctoral degrees. The chemistry college retains an area of nearly 10,000 m2 for various laboratories, which are equipped with major modern instruments. The library of the chemistry college subscribes a large number of professional journals and owns a large collection of chemical books that cover extensive areas of chemistry, thus supporting teaching and research. As one of the nucleic Chinese periodicals in chemistry, Chemical Research and Application, is edited and published by the chemistry college. Presently, there are 851 students enrolled in the college, including 619 undergraduates, 174 graduates in master-level graduate programs, and 58 in doctoral graduate programs. Since 1949, more than 6,000 students have graduated from the chemistry college, holding their successful careers in academia, industry or the public services, with prominent alumni such as Rongti Chen, Lun Xiao, Shiyang Gao, who are Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The faculty members have accomplished and are undertaking over a hundred of research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Doctorate Degree Program Foundation of the Ministry of Education of China, the 863 Hi-Tech Program Foundation, the National Key Research Program Foundation, and other key research programs through various ministries or Sichuan Province. The college of chemistry has established research superiority in quantum chemistry, asymmetrical synthesis, bioorganic chemistry, physical chemistry of non-equilibrium systems, homogeneous/heterogeneous catalysis, molecular imitation and design, laser chemistry, macrocyclic chemistry, thermochemistry, coordination chemistry, chemoinformatics, atomic and molecular spectral analysis, environmental monitoring and analysis, environmental materials, green chemistry, biodegradable polymer, and fire-retardant polymer.
The total scientific research funds that the college of chemistry received in 2000 and 2001 are 4 million RMB and 4.3 million RMB, respectively. The faulty members received five provincial- and national-level scientific awards. The college published 60 SCI-level papers in the year of 2000. The chemistry professors and their research groups have authored 1/5 to 1/3 of the total SCI-level papers contributed by the whole university every year, and ranking NO.1 on the campus for the past consecutive five years. Also, we have always won the first place in the number of proposals funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China for the past five years. Among the 32 presently active research projects, two of which are funded through the Key Research Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, four of which by the “95” National Key Research Program Foundation and National Key Technological Innovation Foundation, and two of which by the “973” Key Research Program Foundation.
In recent years, the college of chemistry has built good collaborative relationships with prestigious universities and research institutes home and abroad, including nearly 20 countries and regions such as the United State of America, the United Kingdom, France, German, Belgium, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
